Public Advisory Issued Amidst Intensified Saharan Dust Conditions

Wednesday, Jun 04

T

he Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs is urging the public to take precautionary measures as thick concentrations of Saharan dust continue to blanket the island, posing heightened health risks, especially for persons with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

According to the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services, the latest weather reports dated May 27, 2025, confirm the presence of dense Saharan dust plumes in the atmosphere. These dry and hazy conditions often lead to an increase in respiratory complaints including dry cough, sneezing, nasal irritation, throat discomfort, and allergic reactions.

The Ministry is particularly concerned about the impact on vulnerable groups such as persons with asthma, sinusitis, allergies, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and other respiratory illnesses. Members of the public are encouraged to limit outdoor exposure, wear properly fitted face masks when outside, and seek prompt medical care if symptoms of respiratory distress arise.

Dr. Gennie Issac-Louisy, Senior Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, issued the following remarks.

β€œThe Saharan dust event currently affecting Saint Lucia presents real health risks, especially to persons living with respiratory conditions. The Ministry is advising residents to reduce their time outdoors, keep windows closed, and use air purifiers where possible. If you or a loved one is experiencing breathing difficulty, do not delay, visit the nearest Wellness Centre or health facility for immediate attention. Our priority remains protecting the well-being of every citizen during these environmental challenges,” explained Dr. Louisy.

The Ministry assures the public that updates will be provided as the situation develops and encourages everyone to remain informed through trusted health and weather information sources.
