The long-awaited upgrades are part of a broader national strategy to strengthen the island’s healthcare infrastructure.
Babonneau MP Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte welcomed the news, describing the project as a significant milestone for the community.
“The Prime Minister has started delivering some of the big things. And this area, this location where we are, is certainly down for some big projects. We’re starting with the wellness centre here. Then we have the housing project under the Ministry of Housing, which will see the construction of 32 two-bedroom units just up this side.”
Health Minister Moses Jn Baptiste noted that the rehabilitation of the wellness centres reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to modernise the health sector and improve access to care for all citizens. He cited several other healthcare advancements across the island.
“We have strengthened the Comfort Bay Citizens Home with increased access to equipment and supplies. We came to the north and rehabilitated sections of the Victoria Hospital, and we have the Betty Wells Urban Polyclinic. And very soon, complete refurbishment will see us open the Sir Winston Paris Medical Complex,” he said.
The improvements to the Babonneau and Fond Assau facilities are expected to provide residents with enhanced primary care services in safer, more modern environments.
The government says the projects align with its national goal of expanding wellness services to rural communities and improving the overall delivery of healthcare islandwide.
