Millennium Highway to be Handed Over Soon, Minister Says

Wednesday, Aug 20

"W

e are hoping that a handover will be made to us sometime in September. The intention is to coincide with the renaming of the Millennium Highway, hopefully in September, as the Julian Alfred Highway,” disclosed Infrastructure Minister Stephenson King on Tuesday.

On the West Coast Road rehabilitation project, the minister confirmed that contractors have been granted an extension, with completion now targeted for early 2026.

We have given them an extension of time, which we hope will see the project completed come January or February next year. If not, then we will have to use the contract to determine the contractor’s presence on that road,” he explained, while stressing that work is progressing.

King acknowledged that the broader infrastructure program has faced challenges due to delays in accessing Citizenship by Investment (CIP) funds, which were originally earmarked for the projects.

He blamed the opposition for what he termed “political mischief and shenanigans” that disrupted the financing stream.

Nevertheless, the minister assured that the government has reoriented and reprogrammed the finances, allowing work to continue.

In addition to the highway projects, King confirmed that road rehabilitation will soon be rolled out in several communities, including Babonneau (Asoba Road), Castries North, and parts of the Castries city area.

You will see a number of areas… quite a number of roads that the government will undertake utilising large, medium, and small contractors,” he said.

The minister added that the administration remains focused on delivering reliable infrastructure across the island, ensuring both urban and rural communities benefit from road improvements.
