The National Consumer Association is an NGO which represents the interests of consumers in Saint Lucia, mainly agitating for greater consumer protection.
Effective October 1st 2024, every worker in the country is entitled to no less than $6.50/hour, $52/daily or $1130/month. According to government statistics, 13,000 workers are expected to benefit from this minimum wage enactment.
“By raising the minimum wage, we are ensuring that all consumers, particularly those in lower-income brackets, have greater financial stability and the ability to afford essential goods and services,” said Dr. Fitz-Lewis.
Other organisations like the Civil Service Association have also voiced their support for this initiative, and are asking for frequent revisions to this wage.
Labour Minister Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte, soon after the Prime Minister announced the October 1st implementation date, explained that employers have been given ample time to adjust their finances to meet the demands of a higher minimum wage.
