s the United Workers Party (UWP) intensifies its “Right the Wrong” campaign ahead of the next general election, party officials continue to defend their policy positions and slate of candidates amid growing public skepticism.

On Sunday, June 22, 2025, UWP-endorsed candidate for Gros Islet, Marcella Johnson, reaffirmed her commitment to revitalizing the northern constituency, with a renewed focus on tourism and employment development.

Speaking at a public meeting, Johnson revisited a project first proposed under the previous UWP administration and says she will implement if elected as Gros Islet MP.

I know that the previous administration under Leonard Spider Montoute had a comprehensive plan to redevelop the waterfront to create small businesses for the people of Gros Islet, to create jobs for Gros Islet. But that plan has not materialised in the last four years,” she said.

She promised to bring the shelved plan back to life, but offered little original plans conceptualised by her campaign for the constituency.

We will dust off the plans of the United Workers' Party regime to buttress economic growth and to move forward and implement infrastructure development programs so that Gros Islet can become a more prolific tourism destination, creating opportunities for the people of Gros Islet,” she added.

Johnson then turned her attention to the constituency’s business process outsourcing (BPO) sector. Gros Islet is home to several call centers employing hundreds of young people.

We have reached a stage in our development where we need to upskill or to upgrade the level of services that are offered in these call centers so that the employees can make a higher level of income.”

Whether her promises will resonate with voters remains to be seen.
