Hilaire Pushes for Extended Carnival Hours Amid Safety Measures

"O

ur view is that, as much as possible, all the bands should be allowed to reach Mega J, and then it can end,” explained Tourism Minister Dr. Hilaire.

Hilaire revealed ongoing negotiations with the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force to extend the official end time for Carnival parade activities to 8 p.m. A final decision is expected following a key meeting with the Police Commissioner next week. He added that while safety remains the priority, sudden music cutoffs can cause more disruption than a gradual winding down.

From experience, when you just shut off the music and everybody disperses, it’s more of a safety issue. We’ve said to the police, allow the bands to reach Mega J. That’s my view on it.”

The Minister also addressed speculation surrounding the popular Bum Bum Wall, a Carnival hotspot known for its spirited dancing and vibrant atmosphere.

There is certainly no official intention to ban the Bum Bum Wall,” he said. “What we will do is remind everyone that they are personally responsible for their conduct. If you choose to go on the Bum Bum Wall and show off your dancing skills, that’s your prerogative.”

Meanwhile, organisers are enhancing public safety with the placement of six fully-equipped medical stations along the parade route. Chair of the Carnival Planning and Management Committee, Tamara Gibson, confirmed that maps have been released to indicate the exact locations of the stations.

There’s a medical station fully equipped with doctors and nurses and, of course, with the support of the Saint Lucia Fire Service. These are available to both spectators and revellers,” said Gibson.

She added that the Carnival Planning Committee is placing a strong emphasis on public health and safety throughout the festivities.
