Antigua & Barbuda - The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court has arrived at a decision in MP Asot Michael’s suit against House Speaker, Sir Gerald Watt.

The House Speaker suspended the MP for three consecutive sittings due to what was described as unruly conduct. In its decision, the Court affirmed its inability to involve itself in the proceedings of Parliament.

On May 18th, 2023 MP Asot Michael was suspended from three consecutive sittings of the House after he spoke out of turn and caused a commotion in the chamber. House Speaker, Sir Watt, put the motion before the House, and the MPs voted for Michael’s suspension. The beleaguered MP later filed an application with the High Court, asking them to reverse the decision.

Justice Rene Williams who tried the case found that “the Court has no jurisdiction to try this claim.”
