Last week, the Prime Minister handed over football gear to players participating in the Philip J. Pierre Football Tournament, which continues to serve as a pillar of youth engagement in Castries East.
“I am very pleased today to make that contribution and to continue to work with and thank the Marchand Football League for what they’re doing for young people and for sports in the constituency, in Castries, and the city generally,” Pierre stated during the handover.
The Marchand Football League has been a fixture in the community for years, and according to the Prime Minister, its revival after a brief hiatus has had a notable impact.
“They have been doing a tremendous amount of work for football in the constituency of Castries East and in the country generally. It’s not just about football. It’s about youth development.”
The Prime Minister’s support extends beyond sponsorship, with continued investment in infrastructure to boost sports at the community level.
“The Marchand Grounds, a large part of the upgrade, has been completed. The stands have been completely covered, the seats redone, goalposts changed, and the next phase will focus on upgrading the playing surface.”
The improvements also stretch beyond the football field. The nearby Marchand Grounds Complex and the James Belgrave Court are receiving attention as part of a wider commitment to community rehabilitation.
