The donation made possible through the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Health System Strengthening Project (HSSP) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) includes ICU monitors, defibrillators, electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, and other essential medical devices.
The new equipment is expected to improve emergency response, enhance diagnostic capabilities, and support patient care across key hospital departments.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Jenny Daniel, stressed the importance of the contribution, noting that while such equipment may seem costly, it is vital to the delivery of modern healthcare.
“Biomedical equipment is not a luxury,” said Daniel. “It looks very expensive, it costs a lot, but in terms of the hospital, it is really an essential, necessary component of the delivery of healthcare and providing service to the public. We entrust it into your care and look forward to its sustainable use, ensuring that it benefits all Saint Lucians equitably.”
The donation forms part of ongoing efforts to bolster the country’s health infrastructure under the Health System Strengthening Project, supported by the World Bank and other development partners.
CEO of the Millennium Heights Medical Complex, Dr. Damien Greaves, welcomed the new equipment, calling it a much-needed boost to both hospital operations and staff morale.
“Today’s donation will significantly enhance our capacity not only in terms of service delivery and technical performance, but also in how it strengthens the morale and confidence of the staff who use these tools on a daily basis,” Dr. Greaves said.
“Whether it’s a diagnostic monitor or a patient bed, each item helps to reduce service gaps, relieve pressure, and reaffirm our commitment to excellence in care.”
Health Minister Moses Jn. Baptiste also applauded the donation and urged MHMC to prioritise the maintenance and efficient use of the equipment.
“I want to encourage the Millennium Heights Medical Complex to continue to work on maintenance, the improvement of equipment, and the development of protocols,” he said.
