n preparation for the annual Jounen Kwéyòl festivities, the Folk Research Centre has partnered with other cultural bodies to launch ‘Mwa Ewitaj Kwéyòl’.

This continues the cultural activities celebrated in Saint Lucia, starting with Carnival. The government promises to provide cultural activities a never-before-seen prioritisation, recognising it as not only a means of revenue generation but nation building.

“Look at our two flower festivals, the rose and the marguerite, celebrating together. We have our differences, political or whatever, but we are Saint Lucians. We must come together in unity,” Cultural Activist, Msgr. Patrick Anthony noted. “We not only need to bring the two flower festivals together but the entirety of Saint Lucia. We need peace in Saint Lucia.

Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) Creative and Artistic Director, Drenia Frederick, announced some of the plans of La Marguerite groups during October, the flower’s celebratory month. “We will have a festival school drive, where the Marguerites will go to the schools and educate the students about the dances and songs - and the difference between the two flowers. We are going to do training programmes.” According to the FRC, the purpose of this year’s Creole Heritage Month is to engender a sense of cultural pride in the citizenry, starting with children.

The FRC has long advocated for cultural survival at the forefront of government policy. When assuming office in 2021, Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Philip affirmed his administration’s commitment to celebrating occasions essential to the island’s culture in grand style. Since then, Emancipation Day 2022 has been one of the biggest emancipation celebrations of its time, with dance, song, and art expositions from creatives across Saint Lucia. This year, the first-ever unveiling of street art in the Capital was done, with the promise of more in coming years. The continuous celebration, which commenced with carnival, is due to climax on Jounen Kwéyòl.
