he Government of Saint Lucia says it is stepping up efforts to reduce the impact of rising prices on households, with subsidies, tax breaks, and market interventions already making a measurable difference.

Commerce Minister Emma Hippolyte, addressing Parliament on Monday, highlighted the ongoing subsidies on flour as one of the most significant measures.

This government has subsidized flour to the tune of millions of dollars to cause our persons to be able to buy bread and butter. And we must always continue to remind everyone who consumes bread that this government, every day, pays almost half of the price of the bread that you eat,” Hippolyte said.

She noted that these measures are translating into direct savings for consumers.

At the moment, the average $200 shopping basket should be about $175, about $25 in savings out of every $200. That is what we have,” she explained.

The Minister added that the government has also moved to make fruits and vegetables duty-free and tax-free at the retail level, keeping fresh produce within reach for families.

Hippolyte stressed that the government remains committed to monitoring the cost of essential goods closely while working to ensure subsidies and tax relief are felt directly at the checkout counter.
