T

he Saint Lucia Labour Party’s endorsed candidate for Choiseul–Saltibus, Keithson Charles, says his political journey is driven by compassion, service, and a deep desire to uplift his community.

Appearing on Chill and Chat with Maundy Lewis on Tuesday night, Charles outlined his plans to restore vibrancy and opportunity to the constituency through investment in people, infrastructure, and culture.

Reflecting on his motivation for entering politics, Charles said his experiences helping others during difficult times revealed the importance of empathy and action.

“It’s been a lot of moments when you have a neighbour in distress,” he shared. “At work, where I worked with Filoselike, you have a lot of persons who struggle with their bills and helping them and seeing the situation even if you have to take from your own to help them. And you realise that there is so much that you can do if your heart is in the right place. You want to see people do better, you want to see your community, the people around you do better.”

Charles said this sense of duty is at the heart of his campaign and what he believes should inspire anyone entering public life. “You really and truly have this passion going into politics,” he said. “I think that’s the real reason why anyone should go into community service.”

Looking ahead, the SLP hopeful said his vision for Choiseul–Saltibus centers on infrastructure, economic opportunity, and community revitalization.

“It has to do with infrastructure, economic opportunity and community. I’m very big on community,” he said.

“Because we’ve lost so much in Choiseul. It’s about a decade, if memory serves me right, that we have not had a beauty pageant, and that’s really dear to me because it’s something that so many of our young ladies look forward to all the time. Carnival we’ve not had it for a while. We’ve not had all of those activities, not even Jounen Kwéyòl has been what it used to be.”

Charles said the decline of such cultural traditions has weakened community ties, but he believes that with better organization and investment, Choiseul can reclaim its spirit.

“There is so much we can do if we have better community structures,” he emphasized.

As the campaign for Choiseul–Saltibus gains momentum, Charles says his focus will remain on empowerment and inclusivity, ensuring that development projects and cultural renewal directly benefit the people of the constituency.
