T

he focus of discussions at the launch of the 2023 Tourism Week was climate change resilience and mitigation.

Present at the launch were representatives from stakeholders in the tourism industry, who outlined the importance of climate change awareness in schools and a new era of green investments into the tourism sector.

Tourism Minister Hon. Dr. Ernest Hilaire announced the government’s intention to enact legislation that will promote investment that protects the island’s environment, calling it ‘green investment’. “We are deliberately including in that legislation to push investment that are green investment,” he said. As the tourism sector expands, he says, governments need to develop ways to promote development that benefits the environment.

“A focus on climate and the issue of sustainability - this causes us to think about tourism and green investment. We have to reflect on the extent to which we take cognisance of the impact of investment. As you expand, make sure the investment reflects an impact on the Caribbean, ensuring tourism is sustainable, the use of wastewater, green energy and recycling,” he explained.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Margaret Ann Adams, notes the importance of teaching students the effects of climate change in schools. This, she says, creates a generation that is more aware of current dangers. “Including climate change-related issues has to be part of that agenda to create awareness in schools. We speak about sustainability, but we know it’s more than just a social or educational thing, it also incorporates your environment. You need to be sure to inculcate that appreciation to your students. We just need to strengthen our approach.”

The Tourism Week Initiatives begin on September 24th and end September 30th, 2023 with a host of activities.
