T

he Governments of Saint Lucia and Taiwan have signed new bilateral agreements for the expansion of the Youth Economy Agency.

In a recent exchange programme involving some forty Taiwanese youth ambassadors, the Taiwanese Government announced its financial support for what is called “Youth Forum”. This programme will improve the YEA’s ability to provide support, training, and certification for young people.

“Youth economy is a critical and inspiring manifesto pledge of Hon. Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre-led administration to create an economy for the young. I do believe that our youth may all have equal talents, but should also have equal opportunity and environment to grow that talent,” said Taiwanese Ambassador, H.E. Peter Chen. To date, the YEA has distributed over $ 1 million worth of grants to young entrepreneurs since its inception this year.

The Youth Forum is a collaborative effort between the two governments to help resolve the issues currently facing youth. “Our government has been working feverishly to tackle some of the issues of youth unemployment and we’ve been successful under the stewardship of Hon. Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre to have one of the biggest reductions in unemployment in our nation’s history. We have identified one of the ways to tackle unemployment is by investing in our youth,” Youth Minister Hon. Kenson Casimir said.

This follows a $10-million injection from the Caribbean Development Bank for the provision of loans and training to youth through the YEA.
