T

he Youth Economy Agency partnered with the Taiwan Technical Mission and Bank of Saint Lucia for a two-day business workshop in September 2023.

This exercise was facilitated under the Jennes Business Incubator Programme and provided training for women in business in business planning and financial training. The programme facilitator, Ms. Gabrielle Louisy, says no effort should be spared in ensuring women are well-equipped to master the business world.

What we’re trying to do is empower young women, especially in this day and age. So, we have to give people the chance and help them out as much as possible,” Programme Facilitator Gabrielle Louisy explained. She says the entrepreneurs were receptive to the advice and lessons being taught. “First of all, I was really surprised by the introduction. We have some really good business ideas. I hope they succeed. I'm really happy with the feedback and the questions - which is what we are hoping for.”

Louisy says the training targeted areas of concern spotted in small businesses. “We’ve taught [them] how to create business plans. We’ve also covered how to register your business and record keeping. Soul traders are very lax in that. We are trying to encourage and hope that people record keep - which is very important. Also, tax filing and how you become eligible for any kind of funding be it loan or grant funding.”

The YEA includes business planning in its services to help train young business owners. According to the organisation, many young people previously didn't have access to training opportunities. At present, with a comprehensive business plan and accurate records, small businesses will be able to acquire financing from other financial institutions.
