he Water and Sewage Company (WASCO) has signed a contract with a consultancy firm as the first step in repairing the main pipeline of the John Compton Reservoir which serves the entire island.

This signing was held on Tuesday, September 26th, 2023, and Theobalds Consulting is the firm that met the requirements for the $368,000 contract. The scope of their works starts from the John Compton Dam and ends at the Millet Gravity Intake Junction.

We have discovered that the pipeline which is over 40 years old has very many leaks and the time has come for us to make a change on that pipeline, a major upgrade which needs to take place very rapidly,” noted WASCO CEO, Zilta George-Leslie. Leslie explains that the contracted firm will work on a 5km worth of pipeline in the Millet-Varnard area. This area, she clarifies, is in most need of repair. Planning and design will commence in October of this year, whilst the groundwork is scheduled to begin in 2024.

Infrastructure Minister, Hon. Stephenson King, stresses the importance of the government contracting firms that are capable of delivering. “This calls for an expert. Therefore I believe that Mr Adrian Theobalds is adequately placed, qualified, and certainly competent as an engineer to be able to undertake this project and to design a project that we all can be proud of,” he had said.

In his maiden Budget presentation in 2022 as Prime Minister, Hon. Philip J. Pierre revealed a number of issues plaguing the John Compton Dam Rehabilitation project undertaken by the Allen Chastent government. He cited that the dredging fund had been depleted to $2.6 million from a fund of $51.8 million with major works still outstanding and the rest not done to specification, amongst other issues.
