Chastanet a No-Show for Parliament Sitting

O

pposition Leader Allen Chastanet is once again the focus of a Parliamentary inquiry over statements he made concerning two members of parliament.

A select committee of the House has concluded its investigation into these statements, and the report will undergo debate in Parliament at a future date. In response, on October 2nd, 2023, the Opposition Leader issued a statement on his official Facebook page, defending his remarks and describing them as factual.

“At tomorrow’s sitting of Parliament, the Government of Saint Lucia intends to lay a report against me for making 2 factual statements during my parliamentary contributions…Rest assured that I will not be part of the SLP’s Kangaroo Court! It is time that we finally stand up to Philip J. Pierre and the injustices that continue to be carried out by him and his minions in Government. I am ready for the fight! Are you?” Chastanet wrote. However, Chastanet did not attend today’s (Oct. 3rd, 2023) sitting when the report was brought forward.

Left to speak for him in his absence was Choiseul/Saltibus MP, Bradley Felix, who called the fairness of the select committee into question. “It was always a concern as to the reason for this select committee and whether this hearing would’ve been a fair hearing. I think it would’ve been a very biased outcome,” Felix said. He also disclosed that he was invited to be a member of the select committee, but denied participation as he was the only Opposition Member, as compared to the three government MPs. As for the truth of Chastanet’s comments, Felix said, “I think the member for Micoud South would've made the statements with the information he has available to him.”

Despite claiming that his statements are true, the Opposition Leader has not provided any documentary evidence in support of his arguments.
