Pierre says issues relating to regional security, climate change and mutually beneficial cooperation will be discussed. The Prime Minister hopes that Canada can use its influence in the world to advance the Caribbean’s climate change concerns.
“We know that the world will not meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius, in terms of global warming. We've seen the devastating effects of floods, droughts, earthquakes, et cetera. Canada is committed to assisting us in this regard,” Pierre remarked. He notes, however, that the developed world isn’t as committed to the cause.
“But having said so, the rest of the international world has not met its commitment of the hundred billion dollars promised to give the developing world climate resilience. Hopefully, we think our traditional friends, like Canada, can help stir that interest to say to the international world that [they’re] the ones causing the problems,” Pierre observed.
The Prime Minister says the summit in Canada will focus on largely four key areas. They are climate resilience and sustainable economies, access to finance and global finance architecture reform, building a secure and equitable hemisphere, and trade and investment.
“As the CARICOM lead on climate change, I will be addressing the summit on the issues relating to climate change,” Pierre informed. He adds that “leaders will engage on security challenges that impact the region’s stability, sustainable development, and economic prosperity.” To that end, he says, special attention will be paid to Haiti and its gang violence.
The summit is scheduled to take place from October 17, 2023, to October 19, 2023.
