PWA Demands Apology From UWP

Wednesday, Oct 18

T

he Police Welfare Association (PWA) is demanding that the United Workers’ Party issue an apology to police officers for comments made by UWP members at their recently held protest.

PWA President Cameron Laure has described the comments and actions of the protesters as disrespectful towards the officers who were present to safeguard the St. Jude Hospital site.

“The leader of that political organisation should apologize to the police for that statement. But I will go further to say police officers must, no matter what we do, we must continue to be professional, and I will always emphasize that. We must continue to act impartial, irrespective of what political party you're confronted with or who you're confronted with; you have to always be professional,” Laure stressed.

Coming under heavy public scrutiny is Saint Lucia’s former ambassador to the diaspora, Dr. Jocelyn Fletcher, whose comments have been deemed by some as a “threat” against law enforcement. In response to not being allowed onto the St. Jude Hospital site, Fletcher was captured  on camera telling UWP supporters  “We will deal with the police and every single one of them…Today is their power; the power is ours. Mark their faces, take their picture so you don't forget them.”

This marks another occasion where the UWP is being asked for an apology for statements made by its members. At a recent town hall meeting, an attorney-at-law was noted as saying that members of the party should “burn” down buildings. When asked to apologise, or to retract his statements, the member refused.
