Hilaire Skeptical of Authenticity of Open Letter to Gov’t

Thursday, Nov 02

A

lengthy and unsigned document purporting to be an open letter from residents of the Rodney Bay area has been circulating in the public domain.

The letter claims residents of the area are burdened by the loud music and sounds of the bustling Rodney Bay nightlife. Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Ernest Hilaire, questions the authenticity of the document as it is unsigned and it is rife with political undertones.

If you’re going to write to government and to say there is a problem with noise pollution, I’m not sure this is how you write a letter. You read the letter and it speaks about the “fiasco at St. Jude” and all kinds of political issues that have been raised by the opposition. The tone of the letter is not a tone of a community that is asking government to take decisive action in their favour,” Hilaire observed.

Rodney Bay groups have, in the past, raised concerns about the volume of music and noise in the community. This latest letter, the Deputy PM says, is not similar to ones written in the past. He also questions whether the concerns raised in the document are the genuine concerns of residents.

I live in the Rodney Bay area and I know they are not speaking for me - and aren’t speaking for a lot of residents. So who are they, exactly, writing on behalf of the residents? Maybe they should identify themselves,” Hilaire noted.

Hilaire, however, suggested that Gros Islet MP, Kenson Casimir, should be in dialogue with residents to ascertain any complaints. Investigations suggest that the letter was first published on a notable pro - Opposition Party Facebook group by a well-known surrogate of the United Workers Party.
