The Israeli retaliatory attacks on Hamas from October 7, 2023, have resulted in over 11, 000 deaths, including 4, 630 children. CARICOM underscores its position, citing Article 1 of the Geneva Conventions.
“[CARICOM] calls on all States to respect and ensure respect for international humanitarian law in all circumstances in accordance with Article 1 of the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, condemns any disregard for international humanitarian law, human rights and the laws of war that have resulted in the widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza and deprivation of access to basic necessities including medical care for the people of Palestine,” the organisation asserted in a statement on November 13, 2023. According to international reports, families have been displaced, the wounded have been unable to access adequate healthcare and bombings are a daily occurrence.
The Caribbean Community reaffirmed its conviction that a lasting, two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can be achieved only by peaceful means.
CARICOM continued that it wants, “an immediate ceasefire in Gaza; the immediate release of all hostages and for their humane treatment at all times in compliance with international law; all parties to immediately and fully comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law; and the immediate, safe, unimpeded access for adequate, sustained humanitarian support throughout Gaza including food, water, medicines, medical care, fuel and electricity.”
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday, November 11, 2023, that the military will continue its battle against Hamas in Gaza with “full force,” in a rejection of growing international calls for a ceasefire. TheGaza health ministry official says that over 41,000 residential properties and 71 mosques have been destroyed, while 253 schools have been damaged in fighting so far.
