n Tuesday, November 28, 2023, the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force launched their Crime Hotline App to aid officers in receiving intel from citizens anonymously.

According to the Police, a vetted team of officers will manage the information obtained through the app. Deputy Police Commissioner  Dr. Mashama Sealy says the app does not store sensitive information like names and addresses.

The only information we would have is whether the information comes from an Apple phone or an Android phone, and that is mainly because of the two platforms being used – Apple Store and Google Play Store,” Sealy informed. “There’s no personal information that you have to input to download the app. You scan, it shows up, you install, and that’s it.”

Police Commissioner Descartes-Pelius says the Force must make use of technology as a modern form of combatting crime. “The fight against crime is ever so challenging. As a result, we need to be proactive regarding how we deal with information received,” she explained. She adds, “In the use of technology, we are creating a culture of security and awareness.”

Descartes-Pelius says public education and sensitisation are needed to ensure citizens know the perks of the app. She says failure to effectively use technology would make it difficult to deal with the scourge of crime.
