Women in Agriculture Benefit from Grant Funding

Tuesday, Dec 12

20 women in the agriculture and agro-processing sectors are now benefitting from grant funds from Raise Your Voice Saint Lucia Inc.

The organisation advocates for the rights of women, particularly those oppressed and marginalised. They believe women are an integral part of the sector here in Saint Lucia and should be given the opportunities to expand their business operations.

This milestone is realised through the provision of small grants to 20 female micro-business owners, strategically geared towards the vital sector of agriculture and agro-processing, pivotal areas of the economic landscape in Saint Lucia,” said the organisation’s Head of Women Empowerment and Training, Albertha Richelieu.

Prime Minister Pierre, who was also present at the ceremony, lauded the advocacy group for their commitment to bettering the lives of their members. Each member received a grant of US$500 and training in business operations and book keeping.

It really makes my heart feel good because I see the message going forward as ladies are taking the challenge. Women have been involved in agriculture since the dark days of slavery…we will continue to advocate for the rights of women. On the government’s side, there’s never going to be a withdrawal of subvention,” the Prime Minister explained.

To date, the organisation has actively pursued food and clothing drives and houses a food and sanitation pantry that runs throughout the year. Raise Your Voice has actively supported residents, primarily women affected by gang violence in Vieux-Fort, providing resources and psycho-social support. Their efforts have been lauded islandwide under the leadership of its President Ms. Catherine Sealys who is well-known as an advocate for marginalised and abused women and children.

This bursary was made during the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
