“Douvan Ansanm” featured for the third and final time, reminding Saint Lucians that the only forward is together. Independence celebrations this year continue their focus on nation-building through unity, resilience, and creativity - keywords that form part of the 2024 theme. Two calendars were revealed featuring national and fringe events.
Co-Chair of the Independence Planning Committee, Agosta Degazon, says the Committee is placing special emphasis on private sector agencies to invest in renewable energy sources as Saint Lucia continues grappling with the effects of climate change.
“Invest in capital that is clean and green. Such public investments will provide job opportunities and generate a more robust level of economic growth. It is becoming increasingly important to forge partnerships with global organisations to explore more sources of renewable energy and undertake initiatives to reduce the effects of climate change,” Degazon cautioned.
Degazon also encouraged a renewed focus on Saint Lucian culture as a means to market the island to the rest of the world. He says Saint Lucian heritage makes the country and its citizens unique to the ever-expanding world.
“Highlighting what makes Saint Lucia different from the rest of the world is crucial given that tourism is the main sector driving our economy. Our heritage needs to be protected and utilized in opening opportunities for growth and diversification. It is extremely important therefore that we formulate policies and enact laws to protect our heritage, both tangible and intangible,” he said.
The Independence Day celebration on February 22, 2024 will be observed in Soufriere this year, a welcomed move to the first capital city of Saint Lucia.
