rime Minister Honourable Philip J. Pierre highlighted a series of accomplishments for his administration on Saturday, August 5th, 2023. This announcement followed a disclosure that the Saudi Fund for Development will be providing EC $200 million for the completion of St. Jude Hospital and the renovation of the George Odlum Stadium.

What an amazing week it has been for the people of Saint Lucia. My administration has delivered projects and programmes that will positively impact the lives of thousands of people,” Pierre wrote in a Facebook post. The Prime Minister reflected on the removal of VAT on named building materials and sanitary products.

Pierre also noted signing the agreement for the Redevelopment of the Castries Harbour, Vendors Arcade, Soufriere Waterfront, Castries Waterfront, and Bananes Fishermen’s Bay among his administration’s fulfilled promises with Global Ports Holding. This initiative is expected to yield greater returns for the tourism industry, with locals benefitting firsthand.

These policies, however, have not been without criticism from the Opposition, United Workers’ Party. In response to the Health and Citizen Security Levy, Opposition Leader, Allen Chastanet, said, “you will be subjected to [this] new 2.5% tax on goods and services. Despite the pressure you are feeling and your cries, this is your emancipation 2023 present.”

However, according to the Health and Citizen Security Levy Act, the 2.5% tax will be imposed on goods and services, except food, medicine, building supplies, et cetera.
