Chastanet Calls Labour Government Corrupt in New Year’s Address

Tuesday, Feb 06

O

pposition Leader Allen Chastanet on February 4th 2024 issued his New Year’s Address, restating many of the usual criticisms of the government.

Chastanet reiterates his claims that the Pierre-led Administration is autocratic and oppresses Saint Lucians.

We now have an oppressive and autocratic government that has betrayed the trust of the people and is bent on dictatorship and victimisation. We've witnessed the complete mismanagement of the economy and the flagrant abuse of our civil rights,” he stated.

Chastanet also chastised the government for what he describes as a tough economic situation.

Have they reduced their salaries at all? Have they cut back on fruitless, expensive trips? Have they cut back on pricey and unnecessary consultants? No. But every other month we hear of new appointments and of trips to Dubai and Rwanda, to name a few. Why would any government subject its citizens deliberately to such hardship? We see millions of dollars being squandered by maladministration of projects, the sale of state assets, and ill-advised decisions. Why should we, as hardworking taxpayers of this country, continue to accept this situation?” he said.

Despite the Opposition Leader’s claims, the International Monetary Fund has projected a real GDP growth of 2.3% for 2024 and up to 5.2% by the Department of Finance. The unemployment rate also dropped to its lowest point since 2013, reaching 16.5% by the end of 2022. The Caribbean Information and Credit Rating Services Limited (CariCRIS) has given the Prime Minister’s economic management a BBB+ (Adequate) rating for Income and Economic Structure. Furthermore, the Chamber of Commerce has reported increased profitability for 2023 whilst 74% of respondents from their business survey reported the need to recruit more labour.  Foreign direct investment is also expected to surpass $2.5 billion.

These policies, however, are not considered a show of development for the Opposition.
