ecent media reports say police had to flee for cover after being attacked with projectiles hurled at them by residents of Bruceville, Vieux Fort during an operation on Saturday.

Police Commissioner Crusita Descartes-Pelius says these reports have been exaggerated and are not true. In a recent statement, Pelius provides details on the Vieux Fort operation, urging the media and the public to be factual in their dissemination of information.

We also seize this moment to promote a constructive dialogue between the police force and the media, to guarantee that the information shared with the public does not empower criminal elements or spread misinformation,” Pelius said.

She says contrary to reports, projectiles were not hurled at officers during their operation. Instead, a bottle was thrown at a police vehicle while it was leaving the area. She said this incident is currently under investigation.

As the officers were leaving the area, an individual threw a bottle that struck one of the vehicles in their convoy. This incident was formally reported, and there are plans to return to the scene for further investigations and to make arrests if necessary.”

She adds that the team conducting strategic operations can handle all means of aggression.

The team on duty, skilled in handling potential conflicts, were fully prepared for any aggression that might have arisen. Moreover, they were equipped to de-escalate the situation effectively, had it been required.”

She also urges citizens to not threaten police officers.

Let me take this opportunity to caution those who believe that they may dare in any way to threaten the safety of officers in the execution of their duties. Officers are fully aware of the dangers of policing, however, such nuisances are avoidable and I would advise that such risks not be taken by members of the public.”
