here are the buses? Infrastructure Minister Stephenson King announced that the Ministry is considering a scheduled transportation system for public minibuses.

This move, he says, should ensure that the public has transportation on the hour, every hour, until midnight.

What we want to have is a public transportation system that is scheduled, that is frequent and that is reliable,” King said.

The Minister opines that the current system does not benefit commuters.

On a morning in Gros Islet is chaos - you can’t get a bus. Many of the times, the Mini Bus Associations have what is called a “rotation system”, which suits them but does not suit the general public.”

King says if public transportation is not overhauled, the country will soon face an issue of stagnation, where goods and people cannot be moved from one place to the other.

Unless we have that sort of system in the country, then the economic activity in the country will grind to a halt after a particular time. In some parts of the country, it grinds to a halt at four o’clock, others at six, and for others, you can’t get a bus after seven.

He adds that the new proposed system will encourage movement in the country as people are guaranteed transportation.

What we need to do is have activity in the economy, so that if you live at Des Barras in Babonneau, and you have a scheduled transportation system, you can leave at 8pm and come back for midnight.”

Minister King says this new system forms part of the Ministry’s plans for “Infrastructure 2030”.
