New Vending Booths Open; No Vending Zone Enforced on Jeremie Street

Thursday, May 30

A

s part of the ongoing beautification efforts in the City Centre, the government embarked on constructing additional vending facilities near the old Printery Building.

The project also oversaw renovations to Bideau Park and the commissioning of the booths on May 31st.

However, vendors selling on the intersection of Jeremie and Laborie Street will no longer be permitted to occupy that strip of sidewalk.

Complaints from pedestrians about the overcrowded and impassable streetsides have spanned years with no permanent action being undertaken by the Castries Constituencies Council.

Castries Central MP, Richard Frederick, says these practices are about to change.

I want to let the vendors who sell in the general area of the Printery coming across onto Jeremie Street that with immediate effect of the commissioning of those booths, that entire area will be deemed a no-vending zone,” he said.

Frederick underscores the importance of improving the aesthetic appeal of the City Centre, notably as Port Castries is due for a major upgrade by GPH.

We need to uplift the city. And if we are doing anything, we are doing it to improve the aesthetic appeal of our city.”

Vendors in the William Peter Boulevard are operating on a new schedule - Thursdays to Saturdays - in hopes of reducing human congestion in the City Centre.

Feasibility studies are presently underway to conceptualise the pedestrianisation of the Boulevard.
