8 brand new vehicles are now part of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force’s fleet, which is aimed at bolstering their ability to respond to crimes.

The vehicle breakdown includes Motor vehicles are as follows 8 pickups, 1 truck, 1 coaster/bus, 10 motor cycles, 5 ATV's and 4 jet skis

Prime Minister Pierre, at the handover on May 31st, assured that these 20 new vehicles are not “replacements”.

I understand there's a new word in town now called “replacement”. And the fact is we are getting new vehicles and I don't know what replacement means but it's the first time since I've been in politics - I've been there for a long time - that the police have got at one time,” Pierre said.

Back in April this year, the President of the Police Welfare Association, Cameron Laure, asserted that the Administration’s investments into the RSLPF have been merely “replacements.”

We have heard that for a very long time that we have given 30, we have given 20 vehicles. Most of these vehicles and equipment that have been given are just replacements. So it really does not even make a dent in terms of the equipment that is needed by the police to do what they're supposed to do,” said Laure during an interview.

However, at the handover, Deputy Police Commissioner, Ronald Phillip, stated that the government’s investments into police equipment have more than doubled the police’s capacity.

During that same period, 24 vehicles were decommissioned. Since then, we have received 48 new vehicles, an increase of 100% over decommissioned vehicles. Again, this is not a replacement. It is a substantial addition,” he stated.

The government has promised to not only increase the number of vehicles in the Police’s fleet, but to provide training and skills to development to improve officers’ ability to solve crimes.
