Body Cams Are on the Table, Crime Prevention Minister Says

Tuesday, Jun 18

"I

f you are always being recorded there are no closed doors to worry about,” explained the Crime Prevention Minister, Jeremiah Norbert when asked about implementing body-worn cameras in the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force.

Successive calls have been made by citizens to establish a monitoring system for law enforcement officers in the fight against abusive uses of legal force.

The bodycams are believed to improve citizens’ trust in police officers as records of their actions and conduct will be available for scrutiny.

The Crime Prevention Minister revealed that the government is considering initiatives like these to improve trust in police officers.

We are going to look into how we can implement something of that sort. Because of the way the police are going to carry themselves, naturally, we are going to see that translating into the public having more confidence in the police because I think that is an issue,” he said.

This call follows an altercation between a Dennery man and a police officer, in which the officer allegedly brutalised him.
