Hilaire Taunts Chastanet’s Court Threats, Affirms CIP’s Transparency

"T

his is political panic - the fear that Saint Lucians will have a better life under the CIP,” said Investment Minister Ernest Hilaire at the Opposition’s threats of legal action.

In an open letter to the government, Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet vowed to sue the government if the Prime Minister did not “take action” to rid the CIP industry of alleged bad actors.

Prime Minister, if you do not take action, we'll be left with no other option but to take this matter to the courts,” said Chastanet during his address.

Prime Minister Pierre, however, has signed the OECS CIP Memorandum and joins regional counterparts in regularising the regional CIP product.

Deputy Prime Minister Hilaire, at the weekly pre-cabinet press brief, rubbished the Opposition’s allegations that promoters have been under-selling the passport packages.

Under-selling passports is illegal in Saint Lucia and the OECS, and while the Opposition has claimed to be in possession of proof, such proof has not yet materialised in the public domain.

If the opposition really pushes it, I will share with you what I found out as to who may have started under-selling in Saint Lucia,” Hilaire said.

The Deputy PM, however, said he will not disclose such information as it would “damage the reputation of the country.”

Just guess who was the person. Well, it would really undermine a lot of what we’re trying to do. We don't want to go down that road. But if we have to, I will explain to you.”

Providing a hint to the media, Hilaire notes that, “Because right now we are seeing how much money went to the National Economic Fund for every CIP donation.”

Hilaire assures the public that the government has a robust development agenda using CIP-generated revenue.
