S

taff of Bank of Saint Lucia’s Bridge Street Branch in Castries were seen standing outside the bank on June 27th as part of formal industrial action.

Prior to that on March 27th, employees called in sick following the culmination of a recent job evaluation exercise for non-management staff, with efforts by the management to address concerns raised during negotiations proving futile.

In a petition penned by staff members, they demanded the resignation of the Bank’s Senior Human Resource Manager.

Consequently we are unable to work under the supervision of the current Senior Human Resource Manager. We hereby declare our refusal to accept any further directives from her and demand her immediate dismissal,” the petition stated.

The Bank, in an official statement on the afternoon of June 27th, disclosed that they have sought the assistance of the Labour Commissioner to resolve these industrial disputes.

We were notified this morning of industrial action by some of the staff which will impact our services to customers. We are committed to resolving this matter as soon as possible and have engaged the Labour Commissioner for his assistance,” the Bank said.

As a result, limited services are available at BOSL Digital, Gros Islet, Bridge Street and Soufriere branches. The Waterfront, Choiseul, Vieux Fort, Bureau De Change and Massy Mega Branches will remain closed.

The employees, through their trade union, expressed their unwillingness to meet with the Bank’s management without the presence of Labour representatives.

At this juncture, the NWU and the staff whom it represents are unwilling to entertain any meeting with the managing director alone as we have lost faith and confidence in his leadership, therefore we are willing to accede to an open forum with the entire board of directors to further clarify any matters that are unclear,” the petition stated.
