EGIONAL: Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines are the islands most affected by the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

CARICOM leaders are set to held a meeting on July 2nd to discuss a joint response to the devastation caused in Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Individually countries have pledged support and are mobilising resources to assist sister isles in the wake of this devastation.

Gonsalves said he is working with Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell to coordinate delivery since Grenada is closer to some of the small islands of the Grenadines that were ravaged by Beryl.

After Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Carriacou Island in Grenada, it became clear that several parts of the Caribbean in its path had been hit hard.

"In half an hour, Carriacou was flattened," according to Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell.

Meanwhile, Ralph Gonsalves, premier of St Vincent and the Grenadines, said one person had died and that there could be more fatalities.

Mitchell said Carriacou and Petit Martinique are completely devastated and officials are currently unable to use heavy equipment since fuel is in short supply due to the destruction of gas stations.

Beryl had maximum sustained winds of about 160 mph at 11 p.m. and the increase in maximum sustained winds from 155 mph to 160 mph late Monday put the storm in Category 5 status, which is 157 mph or above.
