The Millennium Highway was due for completion in June of this year, following numerous previous delays.
The project was first commenced on January 23rd, 2019 under the Allen Chastanet Administration with the signing of an EC$115 million grant agreement.
Funded in part by the United Kingdom and the Caribbean Development Bank, the project had to oversee the total completion of the Millennium Highway and the reconstruction of the West Coast Road from Cul de Sac to Soufriere.
COVID-19 and supply chain issues were attributed to the constant delays of the Highway’s completion.
Infrastructure Minister Stephenson King noted that despite the delays, the government expects the road to be finished this summer.
“They had indicated that they would have delivered the road at the end of June. That's yet another delivery date failed but I'm hoping that at least by August or September, that road will be completed,” King said.
The Minister acknowledged that the contractor has been making significant progress on the Cul De Sac roundabout and weak areas along the road’s surface. King adds that the contractor has to undertake additional tests on the new road pavement to ensure that it is suitable and ready to be used full-time.
“Once they are satisfied with the tests that are being done in terms of making sure that the strength and the resilience of the new pavement that they put, then the final layer will come on and complete the road with all of its other road furniture.”
The financing was introduced by former British Prime Minister, David Cameron in 2015.
