PORTS: Twenty teams from across the Caribbean, including Saint Lucia’s BAYS FC and defending champions SV Robinhood from Suriname, are set to compete in the 2024 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield from July 25 to August 4 in Willemstad, Curaçao.

The 2024 CFU Club Shield marks the seventh edition of this annual second-tier international club football competition, organized for clubs affiliated with the CFU, a sub-confederation of CONCACAF.

The winners and runners-up of the 2024 CFU Club Shield will secure spots in the 2024 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup. This year's competition, previously known as the CONCACAF Caribbean Club Shield, will be managed and organized by the CFU.

The tournament follows a knockout format, leaving no room for error as Saint Lucia’s champions embark on their campaign.

On Thursday evening, BAYS FC, the 2023 SLFA First Division champions, will face SCSA Eagles, the 2022-23 Sint Maarten Premier League champions. The victor will go on to compete against Real Rincon, the 2022-23 Bonaire Football Federation champions.

The rise of the local club has been remarkable. The Bexon Active Youth Squad (BAYS), established in the 1980s, won the 2022-2023 Second Division and swiftly claimed the 2024 First Division title. The club primarily represents the Bexon community.

Roger Joseph, manager of BAYS FC, says the Club is ready to rule.

One of the greatest hallmarks for us, being champions of Second Division, we lost just one game. And we lost just one game in the First Division as well. A number of our players were able to showcase their talent and ability,” he said.

Continuing, “But we stand out in our midfield. We have a very compact and skilful midfield, and we take pride in our midfield and being able to press.

Young talents like Steven Octave and Nick Longville will be in the spotlight in Curaçao, as BAYS FC aims to improve upon the recent performances of Saint Lucian teams at this level.
