n an epidemiological alert, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has called on countries of the Americas to strengthen surveillance following the identification of a new variant of mpox virus, Clade I (Clade Ib), in the sub-Saharan African Region.

While no cases of the new variant have been reported in the Americas, PAHO recommends that countries of the Americas remain vigilant to the possibility of introduction in the region.

PAHO also recommends the dissemination of public health messages to inform and educate target populations.

Continue risk communication and community engagement activities and work with civil society organizations to engage with key affected populations such as gay, bisexual, and others,” the health alert read.

In the Americas, 62,752 mpox cases stemming from the old variant were reported by 31 countries and territories between 2022 and 1 July 2024, including 141 deaths.

Most cases were identified through HIV patient care services, sexual health services, or primary health care facilities and involved primarily, though not exclusively, men who have sex with men.

Possible cases of mpox should avoid contact with others and seek testing to confirm diagnosis, followed by clinical management of symptoms.

Mpox remains a global public health concern, with cases and outbreaks still being reported worldwide. In June 2024, 26 countries reported over 930 cases and 4 deaths globally.
