Police Launch Internal Probe Into Viral Traffic Stop Videos

"I

immediately directed that an internal investigation be initiated to establish the facts of what transpired from the perspective of the officers involved,” stated Superintendent Lamontagne in a statement on Thursday.

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has launched an internal investigation following the circulation of two videos on social media that depict police officers from the Department of Road Safety allegedly using excessive force during traffic stops.

In an official statement issued Thursday, Superintendent Troy E. Lamontagne, Head of the Department of Road Safety and Traffic Investigations, confirmed that the videos came to his attention on Tuesday, June 18, prompting immediate action.

According to Superintendent Lamontagne, preliminary findings suggest that the officers’ conduct deviated from accepted police procedures. While the investigation continues, Lamontagne clarified that one of the infractions involved, an alleged breach of Section 23 of the Driving Code concerning excessive windscreen tinting, is not, in itself, grounds for vehicle impoundment.

Although the internal investigations are ongoing… the officers’ actions deviated from police procedures and the general principles of professional conduct and human rights,” he said.

Superintendent Lamontagne also reminded the public that both law enforcement and citizens have responsibilities.

Police officers must behave professionally and exercise diligence… The public also has a responsibility to comply with all lawful directions. Where one believes police action is unlawful, there are formal channels to seek redress,” he noted.

Lamontagne also condemned any threats made against police officers in the wake of the videos: “For those expressing criminal intent toward officers: erase that criminal intent, lest you wish to face a lawful force that you have not heard of or seen before.”

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force says it remains committed to community policing and upholding the law fairly.
