acing a critical shortage of skilled workers and a loss of traditional know-how, Saint Lucia’s baking industry is making a strategic move to secure its future.

The Saint Lucia Bakers’ Association has partnered with the Saint Lucia Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (SLCTVET) to launch a national apprenticeship initiative aimed at cultivating new talent and elevating professional standards within the sector.

President of the Bakers’ Association, Anthony Bousquet, said the program will go beyond baking techniques to include essential soft skills such as customer service, leadership, and workplace communication.

This program isn’t just about baking. It’s about shaping well-rounded individuals who can thrive in a team environment and carry their skills into other industries if needed.”

A key attraction of the apprenticeship is the opportunity for participants to earn official certification. Bousquet says this offers a much-needed boost in credibility and career mobility for individuals, especially those who may not have completed secondary education.

Many of our employees have the talent but not the academic credentials. This program gives them a path to formal recognition, making their skill sets more meaningful and transferable,” he explained.

Executive Director of SLCTVET, Allen Perry Thomas, described the initiative as vital to the sustainability of the industry.

This apprenticeship program is designed to ensure that experienced actors in the baking sector help train a new pool of workers,” said Thomas. “This will create a seamless transition from apprenticeship to full-time employment, infusing new energy into the industry.”

As Saint Lucia’s bakeries continue to serve as cultural staples and community fixtures, stakeholders hope this forward-thinking program will not only preserve the craft but transform it into a sustainable career path for the island’s next generation of artisans.
