Officially unveiled on Sunday, the programme is being implemented at the Reunion Primary School in partnership with the Choiseul Music Committee.
Project Officer at the SSDF, Allison Gometz, explained the genesis and structure of the initiative.
“The Choiseul Music Committee submitted a proposal to us regarding the after-school programme. They are a group of past teachers and community persons who saw a need within the community, which was the lack of after-school services, and wanted to assist the students,” she said.
The programme currently enrols 45 students and offers instruction two days a week during the weekdays, with additional weekend sessions made available to the wider community.
“This is a very good initiative for the Basic Needs Trust Fund Programme, which is all about reducing poverty and vulnerability while empowering communities,” Gometz noted.
In addition to its after-school offerings, the committee also plans to host seasonal programmes during summer and Easter vacations. These events will not only benefit students but are intended to help sustain the programme financially through income-generating activities.
Gometz encouraged more community members with relevant skills to get involved. “We are inviting resource persons within the community to join the committee so that the programme can continue and have a level of sustenance,” she said.
The initiative has been warmly welcomed by the Choiseul community and is being seen as a promising step toward youth development through cultural engagement and education.
