These sectors include judicial administration, juvenile reform and agro-processing. Taiwan donated XCD 3.1 million to Saint Lucia in that regard. Overseeing the donation was the Taiwanese Ambassador to Saint Lucia, H.E Peter Chia-yen Chen, who says that Taiwan is committed to bettering the lives of Saint Lucians.
“I'm pleased to be here today as we are shaping the future that shines bright for the people of Saint Lucia, through delivering 6 projects aimed at improving the well-being of citizens,” the Ambassador said.
XCD 348,000 will be allocated to the establishment of juvenile rehabilitation centres across the island. Specifically, preliminary works will be undertaken at the George Charles Secondary School, to transform the building into a juvenile centre. Equity Minister Hon. Joachim Henry has, on occasions prior, affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring youth rehabilitation is prioritized.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister, XCD 585, 000 of the monies received will be allocated for the commercialisation of inmate employment for inmates currently held at the Bordelais Correctional Facility. This will be done by expanding the pig and poultry pens at the facility.
On the issue of judicial reform, the government is committing XCD 97, 599 to the investment into the Judicial Enforcement and Management Systems, geared at improving administration efficiency.
The funding will be allocated to support six strategic areas for development, namely:
Establishment of a Juvenile Rehabilitation Centre
Judicial Enforcement Management System
Land Registry Vault Expansion/Rehabilitation Project
Commercialization of Inmate Employment
Primary Tillage Equipment and Scale-Appropriate Mechanisation Technology for Small Farmers
Enhancing Energy Efficiency for Agro-processing with Solar PV Power
This latest donation is one in a long list of others that the people of Taiwan have given to Saint Lucia to help strengthen its human resources.
