T

he Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) is investigating the untimely and suspicious death of one of its prized K-9 officers, Police Canine 642 “Tyson,” less than a year after he was officially gifted to the island by the French government.

K-9 Tyson, who was trained in narcotics and weapons detection, was handed over to the RSLPF in a formal ceremony on July 18, 2024, and had since played a critical role in the force’s anti-drug and anti-firearm operations.

In a public statement issued this week, Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Mashama Sealy expressed the force’s sorrow and outlined the steps being taken to investigate the circumstances surrounding Tyson’s death.

According to Sealy, a full criminal investigation is now underway. A postmortem has been completed, and investigators are conducting forensic tests, reviewing recent deployments, and interviewing relevant personnel.

There are growing concerns about interference, possible internal breaches, or external influences. The police force assures the public that the investigation is being conducted with full independence and integrity. Should evidence point to any breach of trust or collusion, those responsible will face legal consequences.”

The RSLPF has also assured the public that Tyson’s passing will not hinder ongoing operations: “While the police force mourns the loss of Tyson, additional resources, including tactical and K-9 assets, will continue to be mobilised to sustain anti-narcotics and anti-firearm operations.”

The RSLPF says it remains committed to pursuing justice and maintaining the highest standards of operational integrity as investigations continue.
