aint Lucia has once again underscored its commitment to sustainable development on the international stage.

On Monday, Sustainable Development Minister Hon. Shawn Edward addressed the United Nations in New York, where he presented the island’s second Voluntary National Review (VNR) on progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Minister Edward highlighted Saint Lucia’s “whole-of-society approach” to achieving the SDGs, noting the country's efforts to build a more inclusive and prosperous future through collaboration across sectors.

Said Minister Edward: “The government of Saint Lucia continues to make progress towards the attainment of the SDGs utilising a whole-of-society approach. One in which the diversity of our rich culture and traditions is celebrated while simultaneously promoting voluntarism and togetherness.

Edward emphasised that the nation’s sustainable development strategy takes into account the needs of its most vulnerable populations, including those in civil society.

However, he also acknowledged the persistent challenges that hinder inclusive growth, particularly gender disparities in education and employment.

We do have gender disparities that exist in areas such as education and employment. Post-secondary enrollment rates are higher for girls compared to boys, while the unemployment rate in the last 15 years is higher amongst females than males,” he said.

Minister Edward affirmed that Saint Lucia views economic sustainability as a cornerstone of national prosperity. “A prosperous nation is a clear indication of economic sustainability and is one of the main goals of the government of Saint Lucia,” he said.

With only five years remaining until the 2030 deadline, the country continues to call for greater international support for small island developing states (SIDS) as they confront unique vulnerabilities related to climate change, economic shocks, and resource limitations.
