he Chief Executive Officer of the Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO), Zilta Leslie George, has condemned recent attacks on the company’s staff, after a partial recording of a caller verbally abusing employees on the service lines surfaced on social media this week.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, George said while the company understands the frustrations of customers experiencing water shortages, the verbal abuse of staff members is unacceptable.

“We are human, and we are real,” the CEO stated. “The harsh criticism, especially the latest ones where callers are contacting our control room and abusing our staff, is not something we take lightly. We understand the plight of every citizen without supply, which is why we are doing everything we can. From line staff to managers, everyone is working assiduously to restore and maintain service.”

George pointed out that water supply challenges are linked to the ongoing climate crisis, which is affecting Saint Lucia as well as other Caribbean nations. “We may not be able to supply via pipeline at all times because of the severe impacts of climate change. This is not unique to Saint Lucia,” she noted.

The CEO also drew attention to the personal toll verbal attacks can take on employees. Highlighting that staff members wore pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, George said: “We have staff members who come to work every day while recovering from breast cancer. Nobody knows what they are going through. To call our staff and use obscenities is deeply saddening.”

George made a direct appeal to the public stating, “We would like to remind citizens that our staff are people too. We urge everyone to show respect and understanding, especially in these challenging times.”
