ducation Minister Honourable Shawn Edward addressed the 2025 graduating class of Monroe University, Saint Lucia Campus, on Sunday, emphasizing the government’s dedication to expanding educational opportunities and empowering young professionals.

“Our Prime Minister, the Honourable Philip J Pierre, has been unambiguous in articulating his government's mission to create a university graduate in every single household,” Edward told the graduates. “This is not a slogan. It is a guiding principle rooted in the belief that national transformation begins when our citizens are empowered through knowledge, skills, and opportunity.”

The Minister outlined the government’s initiatives to widen access to quality education, stating, “Whether through the provision of scholarships, the upgrading of TV institutions, the strengthening of secondary and post-secondary languages, or the expansion of digital learning infrastructure, we are working to ensure that no Saint Lucian is left behind.” He stressed the importance of partnerships, noting that the government cannot achieve these goals alone, and requires “a genuine collaboration between public institutions and private entities.”

Highlighting Monroe University’s role in national development, Edward remarked, “Monroe University has been a trusted partner in our national development agenda for many years. What began as a promising collaboration has evolved into a powerful and practical alliance built on shared values, excellence, inclusion, and service.” He acknowledged the impact of scholarship initiatives and student-focused programs, saying,

“Through Monroe Scholarship initiatives, flexible programs, and student-centered approaches, we have witnessed lives transformed and communities uplifted. When the first cohort of first-generation scholars embarked on their Monroe journey, they carried with them the hopes of families who had long dreamed of breaking generational barriers.”

Looking ahead, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Monroe University.

“We will continue to work collaboratively to expand access to education, enhance program offerings in areas of national priority, and strengthen pathways for TVET and continuing education students to advance seamlessly into university studies,” Edward said. He also recognized Monroe University’s growing regional influence, adding, “Its commitment to regional integration aligns perfectly with our belief in a connected and empowered Caribbean region.”

The address underscored the government’s focus on education as a cornerstone of national development and a key driver for empowering Saint Lucian youth to reach their full potential.
