rime Minister Philip J. Pierre has expressed deep sorrow and frustration following a fatal road collision that claimed the life of four-year-old Ricki Samuel on Saturday, urging Saint Lucian drivers to end the pattern of reckless and irresponsible behavior on the nation’s roads.

The Prime Minister, speaking ahead of Monday’s Cabinet meeting, lamented the recent spike in vehicular accidents after what he described as a period of relative calm.

“We seem to have had a lull, but it has started back again,” Pierre said. “A four-year-old just beginning life, it’s really sad. Words can’t express how these parents and relatives must feel.”

According to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), the fatal crash involved three motor omnibuses along the island’s southbound corridor, leaving twelve people injured and causing extensive damage to the vehicles.

Pierre emphasized that the issue extends beyond infrastructure or enforcement, it is rooted in reckless driving culture that must change.

“It’s time that we stop making excuses for recklessness,” he declared. “Many of us drive too fast on roads that are not conducive to those speeds. The time for excuses is over.”

He also announced plans to meet with the police to discuss stronger road safety measures, including steps to curb driving under the influence.

“The government will spare no effort in introducing measures to stop or discourage drivers from being behind the wheel in a state unfit for driving,” Pierre said. “We can’t allow the carnage on our streets to continue.”

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Saturday’s crash as the nation mourns the loss of young Ricki Samuel.
