According to a press statement issued by the Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology and Vocational Training, both Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Pierre and Minister for Education Hon. Shawn Edward have been in direct communication with Saint Lucia’s Honorary Council to Jamaica and representatives of the twenty-two (22) Saint Lucian students enrolled at various tertiary institutions across Jamaica.
In preparation for the storm, hotel accommodations were made available to any student wishing to relocate to safer areas. Some students accepted the offer, while others opted to remain with relatives, friends, or on campuses that local authorities deemed structurally secure.
Minister Edward reaffirmed the government’s commitment to student welfare, noting:
“The Government of Saint Lucia remains steadfast in its commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, wherever they may be. We understand the concern that families may feel at this time, and we want to assure them that every effort is being made to ensure their children remain safe and supported.”
He added that the Ministry is maintaining open lines of communication with all students, providing real-time updates, and ensuring that they are informed and supported throughout the storm.
The Ministry also confirmed that regular reports are being exchanged to monitor students’ welfare and that both the Prime Minister and Minister Edward are in close contact with Jamaican officials to coordinate assistance if required.
In a message of solidarity, the Ministry expressed Saint Lucia’s support for Jamaica and all those affected by Hurricane Melissa, stating:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Jamaica and with all those across the region affected by this storm.”
Saint Lucia joins regional and international partners in extending concern and prayers for the safety and protection of all those in the hurricane’s path
