The proposed statue will recognise Alfred's historic performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she captured Saint Lucia's first Olympic gold medal with victory in the women's 100 metres in 10.72 seconds.

Minister for Education, Youth Development, Sports and Digital Transformation Kenson Casimir provided an update on the project during Monday's pre-Cabinet press briefing.

Architects, designers and technical officers from the ministries responsible for planning, infrastructure, tourism and sports are working together on the initiative.

Government says several artistic concepts have already been prepared and are now being assessed as officials seek a fitting representation of the Olympic champion.

A site has also been identified and purchased in the vicinity of the Julien Alfred Highway. However, the proposed location is still undergoing technical assessment. Road safety, visibility and ease of public access are among the factors being considered before a final decision is made.

The intention is for the finished statue to become more than a monument to Alfred's individual achievement.

Government envisages it as a national landmark where Saint Lucians and visitors can recognise one of the most significant sporting accomplishments in the country's history, while providing inspiration to children and aspiring athletes.

The statue is one of several commitments made following Alfred's historic Olympic performance.

Government had also provided financial support toward her Olympic preparation.

With the project now at an advanced planning stage, attention will turn to the selection of the final design, confirmation of the site and the timetable for construction and unveiling.
