O

ne group of young people is leading the sustainable development charge in their rural community.

The Saltibus Youth Development and Sports Club is committed to fostering positive change within our community, so says the organisation’s PRO Vana Sonson. In line with the club’s mission, a clean-up activity was organised at the local river on Sunday, September 17, 2023. Sonson told SNO that this event aimed not only to enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings but also to provide numerous benefits to youth and the entire community such as environmental restoration, youth empowerment, and physical activity. The PRO expresses satisfaction with the event's success. She emphasizes the vital role of citizens in taking responsibility for conserving natural resources within their communities.

The clean-up activity at the river was a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of our club members and volunteers. Our community can now enjoy the stream pool as a valuable source of outdoor recreation, including swimming, fishing, and picnicking. This revitalized space provides a safe and enjoyable environment for all ages,” Sonson told SNO.

She says the organisation remains committed to developing the youth’s interest in environmental protection. “The clean-up activity at the local river exemplified our dedication to youth development and community enrichment. This event showcased our commitment to not only fostering our youths' growth but also enhancing the well-being of our community. We look forward to hosting more activities in the future to continue making a positive impact on our community and preserving the natural beauty of our local environment,” she says.

Appealing to fellow Saint Lucians is Club member Jayann Smith, who is asking for a more sustainable use of the environment. “I think it’s a good thing for the community, cleaning up the area. We had fun in the process. I think that youth should come together and take care of our environment for us to have a healthy community.”

The tragic events of the November 6th trough are thought to have sensitised all Saint Lucians on the importance of conservational use of the environment. Climate change, which is attributed to the increasing severity of adverse weather systems, is an issue that plagues  Saint Lucia. However, the island does not contribute to the climate crisis seen today.
