ARICOM: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared that he will host leaders from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Ottawa for the inaugural Canada-CARICOM Summit on Canadian soil. Scheduled to run from October 17 to 19, 2023, Prime Minister Trudeau will co-chair the Summit alongside Roosevelt Skerrit, the Prime Minister of Dominica and the current Chair of CARICOM.

Operating under the theme "Strategic Partners for a Resilient Future," the Summit will see Prime Minister Trudeau and CARICOM leaders advancing shared priorities, including the development of inclusive and sustainable economies, the augmentation of trade and investment, and the promotion of multilateral collaboration. Additionally, leaders will collaborate on addressing climate change and its effects in the Caribbean, exploring mechanisms to enhance financing access for Small Island Developing States in the region.

I look forward to welcoming leaders from the Caribbean Community to Ottawa this month. Canada and the Caribbean Community have built an enduring partnership over the last 50 years, based on ties between our people and our shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. At this Summit and beyond, we will keep working together to take climate action, build strong economies, and keep people safe, now and into the future,” the Canadian Prime Minister said.

During the Summit, Prime Minister Trudeau will emphasize the importance of reinforcing democratic values, advocating for human rights and a rules-based international order, and enhancing coordination on regional security, including addressing the ongoing crises in Haiti. The leaders will also engage with Canadian business leaders and investors to foster additional commercial opportunities in the Caribbean.
